“El Niño” phenomenon affects the operation of the Panama Canal.

Posted September 06, 2023 at 14:09 pm

The Panama Canal, a vital artery for transit between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, is facing a critical situation. Satellite images taken by NASA in August 2023 reveal a remarkable backlog of ships waiting to cross. Below average rainfall has reduced the levels of artificial lakes, especially Gatun Lake, which feed the canal locks, this situation has limited the number of daily crossings, causing significant delays. This challenge highlights the tension between human activity and nature, especially in a context of unprecedented climate change. For now, the international community is trying to generate coordinated action to solve this crisis.
